Portland with its capital town of Port Antonio is located on the northeast coast of Jamaica. It extends from the Blue Mountains down to the north coast and due to its special geography has the highest rainfall in the island. The result is that Portland is the most lush region on the island and when you add the beautiful beaches and misty mountains, the result is tropical paradise. The parish of Portland is considered Jamaica's undiscovered quarter and is certainly one of the least developed areas on the island. This only adds to its charm.
In the mid 19th century Port Antonio was known as the “Banana Capital” of the world and it also became renowned when Errol Flynn bought property on Navy Island, just off the coast, where he entertained his Hollywood friends. Today you will not find any large All Inclusives in Portland as in other resort towns and accommodation ranges mostly from a handful of ultra exclusive resorts to lodgings suited to the budget traveler to medium sized hotels that fall between these two extremes. There is nothing “touristy” about this Parish.
Portland is home to some of the most beautiful beaches on the island including Boston beach, Long bay Beach and French Mans' Cove. In Boston you will find the home of “jerk” cooking and in the Capital Port Antonio there are many historical buildings of interest. If you are looking for tropical paradise, this is where you'll find it.
