About Negril
Untitled Document

Negril is located on Jamaica's Western tip and covers an area from Negril point in Westmoreland to Long Bay Beach in Hanover. Negril is unique topographically as it combines rugged cliffs, pristine white sandy beaches and the great Negril morass. The cliffs of the West End are famous for its azure waters, cliff divers and fabulous sunset watching. The seven miles of beach runs from Negril river along Long Bay to Bloody Bay with many hotels, restaurants, bars and shops dotted along it. Local building codes forbid the construction of buildings that rise above the canopy of trees which means all buildings blend in well with the flat sandy landscape. The Negril Morass is 6000 acres of marshland which is possible to explore by boat on the South Negril river.

Negril has a reputation as being probably the most laid back, tolerable place in Jamaica. This stems to the time when hippies used to flock there in the seventies and accommodation used to be with local families. Today Negril is probably still the easiest place to make friends with local people.

Unlike the seventies, there is now a whole range of accommodation for the visitor. The range covers the whole gamut. Basic cheap rooms, boutique hotels, villas and 5 star All Inclusives, its all here. Negril has a great variety of restaurants too with menus to suit all palates and budgets and there are several shopping centers and craft markets, so shopping is not an issue either.

Attractions include the lighthouse built in 1894, Royal Palm Reserve, Mayfield Falls and a vast array of watersports.

Negril is still fairly underdeveloped and this is probably a factor in its undoubted charm. Having said that, it does have world class accommodation and dining and one of the worlds most famous beaches. Its perhaps this combination that makes people come back time and time again.
