Kingston is the capital of Jamaica and is located on the southeastern coast lying between towering mountains, smaller hills and the world famous Kingston harbour (one of the worlds largest natural harbours). It was founded in 1963 by refugees from the previous main port city of Port Royal which was destroyed by a disastrous earthquake. Today Kingston is a bustling metropolis and the center of government and commerce. It offers a comprehensive array of attractions for visitors to enjoy.
Kingston boasts a first rate national gallery, many historical homes and even the oldest cathedral in the western hemisphere. Here you can tour Bob Marley's museum or even enjoy the beauty of Hope Botanical gardens. A mixture of modern, fusion and old home style Jamaican cooking can be found at the numerous restaurants that exist around Kingston. Menus range from simple fare to food for the more sophisticated palate. There are plenty of clubs and restaurants to enjoy an eclectic mix of music. From jazz to salsa, to of course, our world famous reggae.
Kingston has many shopping plazas and smaller more exclusive boutiques so there is no shortage of places to shop either.
Kingston is a city of deep contrasts but this chaotic and vibrant city is the heartbeat of Jamaica and its center of culture, hustling and bustling with energy. |
